Boat Lettering Review #21575: Miss Hazard, our West River Bateau built by our neighbor, Norman Hazard, who passed away in 2016. Captain Perry Rogers first began making these working boats in 1904 in Shady Side, Maryland, for clamming and oystering in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. This 36-foot tuck-stern bateau is a reproduction of the historic classic West River Bateau. The builder, Norman Hazard, completed her construction at his home shop on Church Lane in Galesville in the summer of 2009. Only the finest materials were used in her construction – White Oak framing, Douglas Fir keel, Cypress bottom, White Cedar sides and deck. Mr. Hazard won several awards from the Maryland Antique and Classic Boat Society for his bateau and construction techniques, including the Herb Zorn Memorial Craftsmanship Award at the annual festival in 2010 and the “Best Work Boat” and “Best Contemporary” at the annual festival in 2011.

We were unsure whether this lettering would be easy to apply and would look good. It has proven to be both.
